Research Repository: Home

University of limerick's Research Repository is the means by which staff make their publications and other research outputs accessible to an external audience. Maintained by the University Library and hosted on the figshare platform, The Research Repository is where University of Limerick researchers and their collaborators can share the scholarly outputs and research data produced in the course of their research. The Research Repository curates, collects, preserves, and provides open access to this material as part of the Libraries' commitment to open scholarship and collaboration.

Benefits of depositing in the Research Repository

UL's  Research Repository contains over 10,000 full-text (or equivalent) items and includes journal papers, book chapters, conference papers, data, theses and audiovisual material. The aims and objectives of the Research Repository are:

  • To increase the accessibility and visibility of UL's research output and to increase citation rates
  • To support individual members of the University in providing open online access to their research output
  • To ensure the storage of and long-term access to UL's research output at institutional level
  • To attract greater funding to UL's Schools and Departments
  • To showcase the research output of UL's academics, and raise their national and international profile

As the material is freely available online to anybody with access to the Internet, the potential readership of open access articles far exceeds that of articles where the full text is restricted to subscribers. This increased visibility can result in raising profiles and citations for researchers.

The Research Repository holds peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed research output from the University including; journal articles, conference items, books and book chapters, reports, reviews, working papers, patents and datasets. All new research Masters and Doctoral theses awarded by the University, and not covered by embargo, are also made available on the Research Repository.

We recommend that all UL faculty and researchers deposit their research output in the repository. This will ensure your research gets maximum exposure as the Research Repository is indexed by Google, Google Scholar and all other major search engines. Many funders including Science Foundation Ireland, the Irish Research Council and the EU via Horizon 2020 require researchers to make their research publications available to all via open access within certain time periods.

Further details on Research Repository can be found in the ULIR Policy Document. Authors must accept the ULIR Deposit Agreement ( and Creative Commons Use licence when submitting material to the ULIR.

If you have any questions regarding the Institutional Repository at the University of Limerick, email ir@ul.ie or contact 061 23 3296 or 061 23 3606.
