This online session will show you how to use the library`s resources and answer the key questions you might have as new UL students.

  • Where do I find information? 
  • How to search the library catalogue and use it`s features to refine results?
  • How do I access a book, electronic book, and journal article? 
  • Why should I use the library catalogue when I have Google?
  • Who can help me find material for my assignments?

On completion of this session, you will...

  1. Be familiar with the variety of resources available from the library.
  2. Understand the characteristics and uses of multiple resources.
  3. Understand how to find and access resources using the library catalogue.
  4. Identify library collections and resources relevant to your subject.

Searching online databases 

Do you know how to use the library databases and journals to search for information? This library information session will teach you how to by:

  • Helping you identify keywords and synonyms to help you find relevant sources.
  • Demonstrating how to search for sources in a library database.
  • Improving your research skills overall.

On completion of this session, you will...

  1. Know how to access databases provided in the library.
  2. Be able to identify keywords and synonyms.
  3. Understand Boolean search techniques and use them.
  4. Know how to critically evaluate sources.

Cite it right: introduction to Harvard UL referencing

This session provides a brief introduction on how to use the Harvard UL style of referencing to reference your assignment.

Topics covered include:

  • rules surrounding citations
  • rules for the reference list
  • when and how to quote in your paper
  • examples for books, journal articles, and online sources are provided

  2. Learn when and how to quote in an assignment
  3. Know what the essential elements of referencing are
  4. Be able to read a reference and locate a source

Presenting your research visually

Have you ever considered how to present your research in a visual medium such as a poster or infographic? This session will teach you basic concepts of graphic design to help you create an academic poster for an assignment or conference. A brief demonstration and practical tips on how to use Canva, a free online graphic design tool, are also covered.

On completion of this session, you will...

  1. Have a basic understanding of Canva.
  2. Be familiar with some basic principles of graphic design.
