This agreement, as part of the IReL consortium, will allow all accepted articles from UL corresponding authors to be made open access immediately upon publication. Articles will be shared under a CC-BY license and authors will retain copyright.
2024 Quota, For 2022 the Wiley fund has been restructured to allow a greater amount of articles to made Open Access. As part of this the fund was split into a Hybrid Fund and a Gold Journals Fund.
Update September 2024 - The Wiley Gold fund is closed for 2024. Articles submitted for publication in 2024 will not be able to refer OA fees to UL even if these articles are accepted for publication in 2025.
The Wiley Hybrid fund is expected to last the year.
Eligible titles: almost all Wiley hybrid and gold titles, with the exception of a small number of subscription-only journals are covered under this agreement.
According to our agreement, authors are eligible to benefit from no-fee OA publishing when they are a current staff member or student of a participating institution at the time of acceptance. However, certain text in the author workflow outside of our control conflicts with this, asking authors to “confirm your primary affiliation with the institution where the research was conducted” (see Wiley guide for approvers and authors, slides 28-29). Authors should be advised that the IReL agreement’s definition of eligibility takes precedence over this, so authors should instead confirm their primary affiliation with the institution where they are currently employed / registered.
Gold titles: If the author was not eligible (from a non-IReL institution) when they submitted an article to a gold title but moved to an IReL member institution in the interim, the author needs to reach out to the OA customer service team (cs-onlineopen@wiley.com) (or their local approver) to ask Wiley to move the article on to the relevant IReL account so it can be paid for from there.
IReL has a consortial OA publishing fund which members can draw from on a first-come first-served basis. We projected that the fund for each year will enable 100% of our output to be made OA. IReL and Wiley will monitor the amounts available in the fund.
In 2021 this fund ran out in November 2021 due to large volume of articles published in Wiley Journals.
