Digital Foundations: Introduction

Online tutorial in digital humanities skills and techniques.

Digital Foundations

Welcome to the Digital Foundations online tutorial which will help you to acquire the skills needed to create, manage, share and preserve your digital content.

Introduction

New technologies have provided huge opportunities to us all, allowing us to communicate and share with people all over the world. There are challenges too, especially when it comes to keeping up with this area of rapid progress, and there is a real need for us to improve our digital skills to not just survive in this digital world but to thrive.

With that in mind the staff of the Glucksman Library and the Department of History at the University of Limerick have created an online tutorial to give you an introduction to the skills involved in creating, managing, sharing and preserving your digital content. These skills, however, are completely transferable to all aspects of your digital life.

Whether you have photographs, local histories, maps or family papers that you wish to digitise to preserve or share, the Digital Foundations online training course offers practical advice when considering such a project. With guidance on best practices at each stage of the workflow, from initial project planning, right through to publishing online, this resource will steer you through the process.

How does this tutorial work?

Each section will take you through the different stages of a digitsation project, with tips and recommendations and links to external resources. This online tutorial is designed to accompany hands-on training classes held here in the library, however, it can be used as a training resource in itself. Classes can often be arranged for groups upon request.

Who should take this tutorial?

While the processes discussed in the tutorial follow a digital preservation workflow, each stage is stand alone and transferable for your own work, whether starting a large scale preservation project or sharing some old family papers.
