Cite It Right: Guide to Harvard Referencing Style: Acknowledging AI tools

This is the online version of the 4th edition of the Glucksman Library's Cite It Right: Guide to Harvard Referencing Style.

How to Acknowledge Use of AI tools in your Work

If you have permission to use AI tools in your work, include an acknowledgements section within the assignment. This should be a brief statement that clearly describes any prompts or instructions given to the AI platform to generate results.

Example 1

Declaration

I acknowledge the use of [INSERT GEN AI TOOL] to generate an outline for an essay.

I entered the following prompt: “Provide an outline for a 3000-word essay on the establishment of the University of Limerick.”

I used the output at the initial stage of the assessment task to help plan my essay. I modified the outline generated, discarding several suggested body paragraphs and replaced them with my own ideas based on the research and reading I completed.

Example 2

Declaration

I acknowledge the use of [INSERT GEN AI TOOL] to brainstorm topics for an assessment.

I entered the following prompts: “Brainstorm ideas around the topic of the establishment of the University of Limerick.”

I used the output as a starting point for initial research before narrowing down the topic for my assessment.

If you are unsure whether you need to reference an AI tool you have used, you should consult your relevant course lecturer or supervisor. You may also contact the Library to discuss.
