Open Access Publishing: Plan S

The Glucksman Library's guide to assist researchers to publish their work Open Access

Plan S

Plan S, an initiative of cOALition S, was launched in September 2018 with the goal of achieving full and immediate open access to publications. COAlition S comprises a group of research funders that has committed to implementing Plan S, and aims to accelerate the transition to a scholarly publishing system characterised by immediate and free online access to scholarly publications.

To date, the list of funders that support COAlition S includes Science Foundation Ireland, UK Research & Innovation, WHO and Wellcome Trust.

Plan S Principles & Implementation

Plan S compliance

There are three main routes to Plan S compliance:

  1. Publication in fully open access journals or platforms
  2. Publication in ‘hybrid’ journals (i.e. open access within a subscription journal) only under transformative agreements or for transformative journals. The library's list of publishers/journals it has Transformative Open Access agreements with is available here
  3. Deposit of Versions of Record (VoR) or Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in open access repositories without embargo and licensed with CC BY or CC BY SA (or CC BY SA ND on a case by case basis). This is possible under the Plan S Rights Retention Strategy.

If you wish to pursue the green route of Open Access the following tools may help you

Is my journal Plan S compliant?

If your journal is not supported by one of the library's 'Transformative' Open Access agreements you can still publish in the journal of your choice.

CoalitionS have developed a Journal Checker tool to assist authors in deciding what route to compliance is available to them.

Check which journals are compliant with your funder's requirements, and the options available to you

The full list of cOAlition S approved Transformative Journals is available here.

Elsevier has committed 160 journals to transformative journal criteria. The list of Plan S compliant Elsevier journals can be viewed here
